With School Back in Session:  Here's a Natural Remedy for Head Lice

by Cathy Burkemper

School is back in session and lice are rearing their ugly heads.  Millions of children are being sent home from school because the nurses and teachers are discovering head lice.

Head lice are wingless parasitic insects that live in the hair and on the scalp.  They live on “blood meals”.  People from all segments of society can get head lice.  Lice are not a sign of unsanitary living conditions.  Lice are passed through direct and indirect head-to-head contact with an infested person.  This can come from combs, brushes, hats, headbands, barrettes, etc.  Sharing bedding, towels or even stuffed animals can also contract them.  Although uncommon, seats in airplanes, busses and movie theatres are another place for infestation.

If lice are discovered you want to treat the infested person as well as the entire household.  There are many remedies available but a lot of these are extremely toxic and may pose a health hazard, while others are no longer effective, as some lice have become resistant to the chemicals in the products.

A natural, safe and effective way to kill lice is to use the extract of the fruit from the Paw Paw tree.  Paw Paw extract in a shampoo has been proven to successfully and effectively remove lice and their nits.  Enzyme based shampoos are also very effective in killing lice.

Whichever you chose, you can be assured of a safe method of killing the lice.
