Zick’s
Great Outdoors Celebrates 28 Years
By Laura Spenke edited by CB Bonham
Zick’s Great Outdoors, located at the southeast
corner of Clayton and Strecker roads in Wildwood, is in
its 28th year of business. An independently run and owned
nursery, customers drive regularly from all over the local
Midwest to see the lush garden and huge variety of plants
and outdoor products that Zick?s offers.
Not your average nursery, Zick’s Great Outdoors
is also a 4 1/2-acre garden, growing all the time, that
Doug and his staff has planted and worked on for all 28
years. For aesthetic appeal but mostly so his customers
understand what the plants look like as they mature, he
constantly receives feedback on his ever-flourishing garden.
“Everyday someone comes in and says, „This
place is beautiful,” said Zick, who also has his
own gardens at home. “It’s an obsession. I’ve
been working with plants, patios and landscaping since
I was 12 years old.” And now they are adding with
over 6 acres next door.
Not the only one who enjoys working outdoors, Zick attributes
much of his nursery’s success to the passion of
his staff, as well. His sales staff alone puts together
over 100 years of nursery experience. “The
people that work here enjoy their jobs,” he said.
“They really find an interest in plants and want
you to come visit. It’s an outdoor environment they’ve
all been drawn to. It’s not just an asphalt parking
lot with shrubs – it’s a true garden center.”
From annuals and perennials to small and large trees,
Zick’s business includes the growing, propagation,
division and selling of all facets of nursery stock. He
is one of the largest growers of ornamental grasses in
the St. Louis area, and personally selects only quality
merchandise from suppliers all over the country. This
year they have put emphasis on plants coming right from
Doug’s property. From Our Fields helps Save Our
Planet. In a small way Zick’s is contributing to
reducing carbon emissions by not transporting a large
amount of stock from out of town. “We want
your Saturdays to be as pleasant as possible,” explained
Zick, who will deliver customers their items as well.
“We’re open in the evening on Wednesdays,
Thursdays, and Fridays for you to pick out your weekend
projects.”
Another exciting feature available at Zick’s is
their Learning Center. Groups reserve a date and time
for Doug to talk on various horticultural topics. Typically
the outdoor sheltered facility will accommodate 25 comfortably.
There is no charge for a learning center talk. Doug does
ask that a donation be made to Leukemia 24-7 foundation
for Leukemia research. During the year Zicks will be hosting
events to assist Leukemia 24-7 in raising funds for Leukemia
research. You can visit www.Leukemia24-7.com to find out
more.
