ASK THE HERB LADY
With Cathy Burkemper
Q: I know that I should be taking a probiotic, but
the choices are overwhelming. What should I look for?
A: First, you want to look for products that are either
refrigerated or shelf stable. They should utilize a
special delivery form to ensure that the friendly bacteria
are viable and will survive your harsh stomach acid.
There are two main species or strains of bacteria that
are essential in probiotic supplements. Lactobacillus
and something in the Bifidobacterius family. Lactobacillus
bacteria colonize our small intestine and help protect
us from disease causing microbes. They also help improve
nutrient absorption and maintain the integrity of our
intestinal tract. The Bifidobacteria that colonize the
large intestine produce acids that maintain pH balance
in the intestines and helps prevent production and absorption
of toxins.
Q: What is the difference between garlic and aged garlic?
A: As you probably already know, garlic has many wonderful
health benefits, mainly its prevention of cardiovascular
disease. Raw garlic contains powerful sulfur compounds,
which are the basis of its health benefits. Unfortunately,
these compounds are responsible for garlic’s strong
odor and can sometimes irritate the stomach. This can
create problems for some people. There are many types
of garlic available which are odorless and do not cause
stomach irritation. But, since garlic is highly sensitive
to processing, meaning that its constituents start to
change and its benefits can be destroyed, you need to
choose your garlic wisely. By slowly aging the garlic
without heat, the volatile agents can be transformed
into concentrated, stable, safe and odorless constituents,
making aged garlic a good choice for your health.
