Community Builders Presents:
Sabrina and the WWOOFies are Coming To Culver Way Ecovillage
by Tom & Carol Braford
No! Sabrina and the WWOOFies is not the name of a new rock
band, at least not yet. Nor is Sabrina a witch, although
she does have that twinkle in her eyes and a charming personality
that makes you want to do whatever she suggests.
What she is suggesting is that we turn the future common
house for the second cohousing neighborhood at Culver Way
Ecovillage into temporary housing for a few local, dedicated
urban farmers, herself included, and volunteers from WorldWide
Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) who would then farm
our vacant land. Actually it wasn’t entirely her idea.
We were already looking for a way to put these other resources
to use while we build out the first neighborhood.
So the plan is to build the soil at ground level and as
we build out the various cohousing neighborhoods move some
of the growing beds to the roofs, greenhouses and courtyards.
We are also looking for ways to provide sweat equity opportunities
for some of the urban farmers who want to become permanent
residents at Culver Way Ecovillage. The 130 year-old house
that they will be staying in temporarily is 90% rehabbed
but still needs some work.
Sabrina and the WWOOFies will also be establishing a Community
Supported Agriculture program (CSA) and creating opportunities
in gardening for alternatively abled, low income and senior
individuals. Maybe they will call it “Teach Me to
Garden” or “Access to Gardening”. They
will experiment with waist-high, wheelchair height raised
beds and planters using some of the growing methods from
our friend Len that we reported on in a previous issue.
Sabrina and the WWOOFies are looking for suitable housemates
and alternatively-abled, senior and other individuals who
would like to participate in their project, as well as subscribers
and volunteers for the forming CSA.
In December, we will have our first group arts & crafts
workshop the afternoon of Saturday, December 1. Please contact
us if you would like to participate. We will also have a
site tour on Saturday, December 15, at 10:00. You are welcome
to join us to learn about cohousing and ecovillages and/or
how to join Sabrina’s group.
