Tempest
In A Garden Plot
Signs of spring are everywhere at Herbal Comfort Herb
Nursery and Greenhouse near Doniphan, MO.
Owner Nancy Smith, who does most of the planning, propagation
and design always finds herself in a flurry of activity
in the late winter and early spring months. She always
treasures the hours spent seeding, pruning, taking cuttings,
potting, weeding and designing containers. Without exception,
all growing is done organically and sustainably. Natural
soil amendments are used to improve the soil. Herbal Comfort
has developed its own greenhouse spray using nothing but
insecticidal soap and eucalyptus essential oil. This blend
has helped Nancy achieve an ecological balance in her
greenhouse that has almost eliminated any pests.
After spending most of the fall and winter coordinating
the sale and transition of Sappington Farmers Market to
its new ownership and new layout, she’s scrambling
to catch up. In the next few weeks, the time will be spent
taking and rooting cuttings, transplanting, and potting
small plants into larger containers. An important philosophy
at Herbal Comfort is “we know every plant we grow”.
This will be the first time her plants will be available
for sale at Sappington Farmers Market. Beginning in mid-April,
with 6-inch containers of Provence lavender plants, she
will be providing many varieties of culinary, medicinal
and ornamental herbs throughout the spring and early summer.
Other local greenhouses will be well represented at Sappington.
Floating Farms is a Licking, MO. hydroponic greenhouse
with a vision. Owner Randy Wood, who is also the business
manager of Farm to Family Naturally, raises basil hydroponically
for sale to Sappington Farmers Market and other St. Louis
groceries. His vision for the future includes an aquaponic
operation which involves a completely sustainable synchronicity
between the basil plants and tilapia fish. The water,
in a self-contained system would be pumped through the
fish tanks, and the fish waste would fertilize the basil
plants. The fish would be harvested after a process which
ensures that they are harvested from very clean water,
resulting in a safe, organic, tasty fish product which
will also be sold at Sappington Farmers Market.
Abundant Acres is a two-year-old greenhouse operation
in the central Ozark region. Owners Randell and Pam Agrella
are dedicated to providing an extensive selection of sustainably-grown
heirloom varieties of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and
sweet potatoes. They will be provided sixteen different
interesting and delicious tomato varieties for sale at
Sappington Farmers Market.
SAPPINGTON FARMERS MARKET IS LOCATED AT 8400 WATSON RD.
IN SO. ST. LOUIS COUNTY.
