Community Builders Presents:
At Culver Way Ecovillage We Say that Being Green is Just
the Beginning
by Tom & Carol Braford
Buying a hybrid car and
changing your light bulbs to compact fluorescents helps;
more insulation in your attic and more efficient appliances
is usually a good move; thinking globally and eating
locally definitely has an impact; walking and bicycling
is good for you and the environment.
But it isn’t until we get beyond what we can do
individually and start considering our collective actions
that we begin to have a chance of causing a sustainable
world. And our chances are even greater if we are about
causing a sustainable culture as well.
We teach our kids to share, not out of a desire to deprive
them of anything, but out of our understanding that
the fullness of life comes not through possessions alone,
but through fellowship with others as well.
The planet cannot afford two cars in every garage and
a McMansion on every three-acre lot. We have to start
ratcheting down our consumption and backing away from
“the one with the most toys wins” mentality
or our children and grandchildren and all other life
forms are going to lose.
So, while it’s not a panacea, the cohousing /ecovillage
movement is one path to a saner way of getting our needs
met, as well as the needs of our neighbors and nature.
At Culver Way Ecovillage, we are lowering our ecological
footprint while simultaneously improving our well-being
simply by sharing – sharing the cost of building
a state-of-the-art green community, sharing a common
house, sharing laundry facilities, tools, appliances,
even vehicles, breaking bread together, gardening together.
And don’t worry if the child in you is shouting,
“But what about me, where’s mine?”
You also have your own slightly smaller, yet very livable
condominium home that includes a kitchen, bathrooms
and most of the other things you would expect in a single
family home.
So, if you care about your well-being, the well-being
of others, plants, animals and the planet itself, give
us a call. Or, better yet, join us for an orientation
and tour on Saturday, 4/5 or 4/26, at 11:00, followed
by a potluck lunch. And look for our booth at the Earth
Day celebration in Forest Park on the 20th.
