Adjustments Benefit Joints in the Extremities
By Dr. Brenda L. Kingen, D.C.
Most of you know that chiropractic alleviates dysfunction
in the spine that may impede nervous system activity.
And you know that chiropractic care wards off disability
in the hips, back and neck as well. You are probably also
aware that this drug-free approach to health averts headaches,
jaw pain and fibromyalgia. But did you know that chiropractic
offers effective correction for problems in the joints
of the upper and lower limbs (extremities)?
Dr. Kingen addresses maladies affecting the ankles, knees,
wrists, elbows and shoulders with a multifaceted approach.
First, alignment in the extremities is influenced by spinal
posture. Consequently, poor posture may spark a chain
reaction that throws limbs slightly out of balance, leading
to uneven wear on the joints. The uneven wear can lead
to tendonitis, bursitis, soft tissue tears and arthritis.
At Kingen Chiropractic, we target the specific joint involved
as well as look at how your overall posture is affecting
that joint. This may include adjustments of the specific
joint in the extremity and the spine. It may also involve
using cold laser therapy or acupuncture to decrease swelling
in the joint. Custom tailored exercises are also given
for the patient’s unique circumstances. In addition,
ergonomic advice is also a common component of an extremity
care plan.
Most “itis” conditions such as tendonitis,
bursitis, fascitis and even carpal tunnel syndrome are
created by some repetitive stress. The repetitive stress
may include sitting at a computer, an athletic activity
such as tennis, golf, running or lifting weights, yard
work or some major home project like painting. In my 15
years of experience, I have seen many of these inflammatory
conditions return when the underlying joint dysfunction
is not addressed. For example, how many of you have sprained
an ankle and treated it as a soft tissue injury only by
using rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE)? The
ankle never seems to quite heal right and becomes your
WEAK ankle!! When you sprained that ankle there was also
some misalignment in the bones of the ankle or the foot.
Your body adapts because it has this wonderful ability
to do that. Then your knee or hip starts to bother you
because of altered mechanics and good “Ole Arthur”
(Arthritis) sets in because of the loss of motion in the
joint. By the way, you don’t get arthritis because
of age…….I’ll address that in another
article.
Over the years, we have had many patients that were told
they needed shoulder, knee or carpal tunnel surgery. They
even had MRI’s that showed minor tears. Many of
those situations resolved with a more natural approach.
So before you make a decision to do surgery or even or
do the cortisone shot, get a second opinion from a chiropractor
that cares for extremities.
