Ask
the Herb Lady
With Cathy Burkemper
Q: Should I take fish oil if I am pregnant?
A: Absolutely. Studies have shown that pregnant women,
who eat more omega-3 fatty acids (DHA), give their babies
a better chance of mature brain development. It is especially
important during the last trimester as that is when
brain cell development takes place. DHA is one of the
nutrients passed from mother to fetus across the placenta.
It is also important to supplement during the first
three months of the babies life when the brain is undergoing
rapid growth. Higher DHA levels lead to better sleep
patterns and a healthier nervous system.
Q: I have been feeling very anxious lately. I do not
want to take an anti-depressant and would prefer to
take something natural without any side effects. Any
suggestions?
A: One of my favorite recommendations is L-Theanine.
It is an amino acid that can help increase concentration
and focus, and create deep relaxation without sedation.
L-Theanine increases blood levels of gamma-aminobutyric
acid (GABA), which helps maintain optimum levels of
the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin in the
brain. One usually experiences a relaxing effect within
30 – 40 minutes of taking it. It does not cause
drowsiness, just promotes relaxation and may also help
to lower blood pressure.
