BREATH
OF LIFE
By Wyatt Gregory, Psy. D
Our breath gives us life. The more aware and connected
we are with the sensation of our breath, the more fully
present we can be with the life that it gives us. Movement
through the transitions of life is possible because of the
movement of breath in our bodies, and as we face the transitions
in our life we can find comfort and wisdom in our breath
cycle. Our breath cycle is perfect and complete and offers
all that we need.
The breath nurtures and supports our development and transformation
while we move through the transitions of life. The feminine
principles that are represented in the inhale of the cycle
asking to be fulfilled - being, receiving, allowing, trusting,
surrendering, and the masculine principles that are represented
in the exhale of the cycle calling for self-expression -
becoming, action, substance, direction, are both united
together and held completely in the pause. We find rest
and satisfaction in the pause and we wait for the impulse
of our next inhale and eagerly surrender as breath moves
us again. The mutual interdependence of these principles
is a miracle in that their relationship creates movement
and unites the states of being and becoming into what we
ultimately experience as our Self.
As we develop a ‘breathful’ awareness of Self
we begin to recognize the principles at work in our breath
cycle and realize that it is not us moving through the transitions
of life but we are rather being moved by breath. We become
aware of the wisdom in the principles of our breath cycle
and we begin to understand the nature of transformation.
Patterns of resistance begin to shift as we become anchored
in the experience of breath, and we begin to notice that
we have the ability to participate with the development
of our Self at a core level by allowing our Self to be moved
by breath.
